Here at Seal-Lite, we want to help and reassure our customers through every step of their window renovation journey.
That’s why we’ve put together this guide on the main window styles, how they function, how to maintain them, and what type of property they may suit. There are countless different styles out there, but the ones we’ll be focusing on include casement, vertical sliders, flush sash and tilt & turn.
If you have any further questions after reading, feel free to contact us.
Casement windows are the most popular style of window across the South West and the wider UK. They are beloved for their smart, versatile and timeless design.
A typical casement window is basically compromised of:
Of course, a casement window comes in a variety of designs. The common denominator across them all is that they have multiple panes, arranged into a configuration.
Because of their versatility, casement windows can be manufactured to suit any home in the UK.
For maintenance, in both uPVC or aluminium, all that’s required is the occasional wipe down with warm, soapy water. This helps to prevent dirt and dust from accumulating near the opening mechanisms, which could cause the windows to get stuck.
A vertical slider is also known as a ‘sliding sash window’. They were the most popular window style in Victorian times, and so carry with them a traditional, vintage feel. However, thanks to modern developments in uPVC and aluminium, there is nothing ‘old-fashioned’ about their energy efficiency. Achieving U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²k, these windows are now entirely suitable for the 21st century home.
They are characterised by their signature moving panels, or ‘sashes’. Vertical sliders have one or more sashes that slide over each other. Usually, their panes are very large, helping to fill the home with natural light.
Traditionally, they are set inside timber frames. Therefore, for homeowners seeking a traditional look, we’d recommend getting them installed with a woodgrain-effect finish. This would give you access to all the aesthetic benefits of real timber, without all the maintenance hassle.
In fact, the only maintenance we’d recommend for these sliding sash windows is the occasional lubrication of areas like the frame, hinges, and pully features. This will help to prevent the sliding mechanism from sticking and ensure effortless functionality for years to come.
A flush sash window is very similar to a casement window, in that it is also a window configured with multiple sections and opening parts that open on hinges. However, the key difference is that the parts that open sit flush within the frame. When closed, the window is level with the outer frame, creating an appearance that is completely smooth.
Compatible with woodgrain-effect finishes, they are great for traditional homes in more rural parts of the South West. However, their sleek, slimline aesthetic also makes them a great choice for modern Bristol homes with a more architectural style.
As with casement windows and vertical sliders, occasional cleaning and mild lubricating is the only maintenance required to keep them in top condition. However, be careful not to over-lubricate, especially near cylinder locks, which are already well-lubricated for smooth operation.
Tilt & turn windows have an opening axis on both the bottom and the side of the frame. This gives the window dual functionality. By turning the handle upwards, the window can open inwards at the top to ensure effective ventilation. Hot air can escape through the top, while cool air comes in through the side.
By pushing the handle down, the window can open all the way from the side. This provides a means of escape in emergency situations.
Benefits of this dual mechanism include:
No matter the style, all our windows can be customised with:
